So I have tried to make bread the old fashioned way several times. I have had good results and bad results. Let’s face it, bread is tricky to make. You have to have the perfect temperatures and timing for everything to rise and look beautiful. I no longer have the time for this, but I love the smell of bread baking.
Enter the bread machine. My mother gifted me her old bread machine, which has been in the family for well over 10 years and that bad boy is still baking away. I absolutely love it. There are all kinds of bread recipes for a bread machine, and this wheat recipe is the one we use the most so I thought I would share!
(For a large 1 and a 1/2 pound loaf)
- 2 & 1/4 tsp. Active dry yeast
- 1 & 2/3 cups bread flour
- 1 & 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1 & 1/2 tsp. Salt
- 1 & 1/2 tbsp. Vegetable oil
- 3 tbsp. Honey
- 1 & 1/4 cups water
Add all of your ingredients into the baking pan per your manufacturers directions. For my machine (I have a Breadman) it instructs to add the liquid ingredients first and then the dry on top. You then dig a small hole on top of the dry to put the yeast in, but make sure the hole does not touch the liquid.
That is it! You just close the lid, select the browning level you want and presto. A little over 2 hours later you have amazing baked bread!
